SayPro partnership with United States Peace Corps Building Community Capacity to Address Addiction and Substance Abuse

SayPro, in partnership with the United States Peace Corps, is building community capacity to address addiction and substance abuse—issues that harm health, families, and livelihoods across both urban and rural areas. SayPro uses a public health and human rights approach to treat addiction as a disease, not a crime. Community-based rehabilitation programs include education, counseling, harm reduction, and relapse prevention. Peace Corps volunteers assist in capacity-building, curriculum development, and training local facilitators.

SayPro trains peer educators, health workers, and social service providers to recognize signs of substance abuse, deliver early interventions, and support recovery. SayPro also helps communities establish support groups and safe spaces where individuals can seek help without stigma. Peace Corps volunteers help conduct these sessions and assist with building referral networks for more specialized treatment. SayPro ensures services are trauma-informed, culturally appropriate, and accessible regardless of socioeconomic status.

SayPro incorporates family involvement into recovery plans, educating relatives about addiction, emotional support, and co-dependency. It also provides vocational training and reintegration support for individuals in recovery, helping them rebuild lives through employment and education. Peace Corps volunteers support these initiatives by linking communities to job centers, skill-building organizations, and microfinance partners. SayPro emphasizes that recovery is possible with community understanding, structured care, and compassionate leadership.

SayPro tracks outcomes such as reduced substance use, improved mental health, and successful reintegration. The organization shares these results to inspire other communities and influence national drug policy reforms focused on health rather than punishment. SayPro uses art, music, and community events to challenge stigma and build awareness. With sustained Peace Corps collaboration, SayPro is turning pain into possibility—creating pathways for healing, dignity, and long-term recovery in communities impacted by addiction.
