SayPro partnership with United States Peace Corps Supporting the Development of Peer Support Programs for Mental Health

SayPro, in collaboration with the United States Peace Corps, is supporting the creation of peer support programs to address growing mental health challenges in underserved communities. These programs, championed by SayPro, empower local youth and adults with lived experience to support one another through group-based discussions, mentorship, and listening circles. With Peace Corps volunteers facilitating initial training and resource development, SayPro ensures peer leaders are equipped with basic psychological first-aid and referral knowledge. SayPro recognizes that many individuals are more comfortable sharing with peers than professionals, especially in culturally sensitive environments. Through trust-building, empathy, and shared experience, SayPro’s peer models foster early intervention and help reduce stigma around mental health in both rural and urban settings.

SayPro has designed the peer support initiative to be low-cost, community-led, and deeply sustainable. With support from Peace Corps educators, SayPro has rolled out training workshops across several pilot regions, enabling local leaders to create small but impactful peer groups. These support groups meet regularly to discuss anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress management, with SayPro providing continued guidance and resources. SayPro integrates art therapy, mindfulness, and storytelling into these sessions to promote emotional healing. In regions lacking clinical professionals, these peer groups serve as lifelines. SayPro believes mental health care must be democratized and locally adaptable for long-term social resilience.

To maintain safety and quality, SayPro has developed monitoring tools and a referral framework to connect individuals in need of advanced care to local health services. SayPro also trains peer facilitators in crisis response and self-care, recognizing the emotional labor involved in support work. In collaboration with Peace Corps volunteers, SayPro facilitates exchange visits where peer leaders learn from other communities’ experiences. These exchanges deepen the program’s impact and allow for knowledge transfer across diverse contexts. SayPro is building a peer support community that is empowered, well-supported, and interconnected. The goal is to create a nationwide network that acts as a grassroots frontline for mental wellness.

SayPro is now working on integrating peer support programs into schools, community centers, and even workplaces. By embedding mental health awareness into everyday life, SayPro ensures the topic becomes normalized and accessible. SayPro is also exploring digital tools to enhance virtual peer check-ins and safe online spaces. With Peace Corps support, SayPro is preparing a peer support program toolkit for NGOs and community groups to replicate. This initiative reflects SayPro’s vision of holistic health, where communities take ownership of mental wellness. By valuing empathy, lived experience, and community wisdom, SayPro creates a caring and connected ecosystem for mental health.
